tour 2: Bicycle Tour
Bangkok's Chinatown is
known as the most authentic
one outside China.
We depart from the Grand
China Princess Hotel. Immediately
we cycle
through narrow shopping
alleys filled with trinkets, wallets, dolls, watches, earrings,
school notebooks and much, much more.
The spiritual world isn't forgotten: suddenly you notice silence,
burning candles and incense. A Chinese shrine. The guide explains
and pours some oil on the flame of life. We have a small tradition: the youngest member of the group also pours oil on the flame of life. A moment for a
great picture!
Life goes on, and so do we. From spiritual silence we bike into a
engine recycling area. A bigger difference is hard to imagine.
Not a junkyard, explains your guide. Old engines are taken
apart and put together again. Not looking green, but very much
a green solution anyway.
We cross the river by ferry to explore the other side of Bangkok:
Thonburi. It’s quieter here. Not as busy as Bangkok. Hardly a
foreigner to be seen. We pass through areas where the lower middle
class live. People like you and me. Amazing, how much
differences you see in just three hours.
We take another ferry back and cycle through the fruit and flower markets. Before you know it we are back to the Grand China Princess hotel...
